Subject: Spelling + Alphabet

Skills: Writing, Reading

Level: Elementary

Recommended Age: 10+

Number of Participants: 2-12 players, preferably even or multiple to three

Time: 15-20 minutes

Place: Classroom

Equipment: A black- or whiteboard

Materials: A piece of chalk or a marker

Preliminary Preparation: Not required

Immediate Preparation (3-5 minutes).

1. Divide the game participants into two or three parts of (roughly) equal size.

2. Ask the players to make a list of words, using as many letters of the alphabet as possible, whitout repeating them. Allow the students a reasonable amount of time for completing this task. While they are working, circulate, monitor and assist, if necessary.

How to Play. When the teams have finished, bring the class to order. Afterwards, invite the teams to nominate secretaries, who come to the board and write their lists. The board might end up looking like this:

                А                                        В                                        С

              box                                    awful                                   bus

             luck                                     dry                                 cashpoint

        fisherman                            something                               red

     __________                        __________                     __________

        16 letters                             17 letters                          15 letters

At the same time, the competitors carefully check the spelling and count up the number of used letters. In the given case, by the number of letters used, Team A gets 16 points, Team B gets 17 points and Team C gets 15 points. Threby the winner of the game is Team B.

Advice. In a class of adult learners, it would be more feasible to carry out the game for individual standing.

Variation. This activity can also be used as a solo game. In this case, the player competes with themself, trying to find the most optimal combination.
