Ideas for English Lessons

Subject: Vocabulary + Spelling + Alphabet

Skills: Speaking.

Level: A1

Recommended Age: 7-9 y.o.

Number of Participants: 3-6 players.

Time: 30-40 minutes.

Place: Playground.

Equipment: Not required.

Materials: A small box; Pieces of chalk of different colour for each player.

Preliminary Preparation: Not required.

Immediate Preparation (10-15 minutes). First draw two houses about 1 m wide and 10 m apart. Next provide the players with the pieces of chalk. Then ask each player to draw a winding path about 0.1 m wide from one house to the other. When everything is ready, all the pieces of chalk are put in the box. Next you take them out one by one, writing vocabulary categories, e.g.: 'Family' with red chalk, 'Jobs' with blue, 'Countries' with green and so on. After writing a word, you put the piece of chalk back in the box.

How to Play. First Player A, without looking, takes a piece of chalk out of the box. For example, this is blue. Next he/she stands within the first house at the beginning of the blue path. Then he/she calls out, e.g.: 'Hairdresser!' After that, he/she steps on the blue path, putting one of his/her heel close to the house and calling out: H!'. Next he/she takes another step, putting the heel of his/her other foot close to the toe of the first one and calling out: 'A!', and so on until all the word has been spelt. Now it is Player B’s turn to take a piece of chalk and so on. When each child has had their turn, Player A calls out the second word of the given category and so on. The winner of the game is the first player to get the second house.
