Hidden Letter

Subject: Spelling

Skills: Listening, Speaking, Writing.

Level: A2

Recommended Age: 12+

Participants Number: 4-10 players.

Time: 20-25 minutes.

Place: Classroom.

Equipment: Board.

Materials: A piece of chalk / a marker.

Preliminary Preparation (5-10 minutes). Think of a letter, e.g. R. Next choose 5 words, containing this letter. In order to better 'hide' the letter, you should choose the words in such a way, that they contain as many the same letters as possible. Your list may look like this:

 architect, cathedaral, daughter, theatre, weather

Immediate Preparation (2-3 minutes). First read out your list to the players at normal speaking speed. Next ask them to guess the 'hidden' letter.

How to Play. The game may start like this:

Player А: Is it 'T'?

You: No, it isn't.

Player B: Is it 'E'?

You: No, it isn't.

Player C: Is it 'H'?

You: No, it isn't.

Player D: Is it 'A'?

You: No, it isn't.

Player E: Is it 'R'?

You: Yes, it is.

As a result, Player E gets 1 point. Then ask each player to think of a letter and to choose 5 words, containing it. When everyone is ready, Player A reads out his/her list. Now it is Player B's turn to make the first guess and so on. The game lasts as long as all the 'hidden' letters are revealed. At the end, the gained points are counted up. The winner is the player to get the most points in total.
